Past Programming
Art Room After School
In September 2023 Art Room expanded offerings to include an after-school program: providing weekly standards-based arts education at no cost to students or their families. This program began on September 26th 2023 and will run through the academic year. The program is divided into 5 units lasting 6 weeks, with a capacity of 30 students per age bracket. By segmenting the program, we hope families have the ability avoid conflict with other seasonal extra-curricular activities. Because everyone deserves art!
Unit 1: Appetizers
Unit 1 was an introduction to various mediums, giving kids a chance to explore new processes and discover some favorites. Students dove into the topics of the basics of composition and color theory, serving as a foundational course for new artists.
September 26 - November 9 2023
Unit 2: Paper Potential
Unit 2 focused on some of the countless possibilities of paper as an artistic medium. Students "drew with scissors" inspired by the work of Henri Matisse, and created three-dimensional sculptures using armature and paper mache.
November 14 2023 - January 18 2024
Unit 3: Printmaking
Students explored the principles of color separation and line economy through analog graphic design processes such as screen printing and block printing.
January 23 - February 29 2024
Unit 4: Clay
Students used air dry clay to create decorative and utilitarian pieces. Students learned the foundational skills of hand building through slab rolling, slip and scoring, and coiling. Instructors led demonstrations on projects such as animal sculptures and pinch pots with opportunity for self led projects that will be painted and sealed.

2023 Art Camp at Fort Stevens State Park - In Partnership with Astoria Visual Arts
Make Your Mark
What do screens, wood blocks, seaweed, and the sun have in common? They all make pretty amazing prints! Students worked through the process of turning simple shapes, shadows, and sketches into printed motifs through screen printing, woodcut relief, cyanotypes, marbling, and more! All projects were hands-on fun and designed to let kids of all ages and abilities just be kids, exploring new materials and media to broaden their horizons.
June 26th - 29th 2023
Regenerated Gems
It's true, not all that glitters is gold, but trash can be turned into treasure! Regenerated Gems was intended to bring out the young environmentalist or aspiring inventor in all of us. Campers used unconventional materials to breathe new life into forgotten items. All projects were hands-on fun, designed to encourage kids of all ages and abilities to just be kids, be curious, explore, and appreciate the wonderous world around.
July 24th - 27th 2023
Stand Up, Stand Out
Make art that pops right off the table - no 3D glasses required! Campers explored techniques for creating 3-Dimensional art including modeling, assembling, and casting. The perfect place for those who like to get a little messy! All projects were hands-on fun, designed to encourage kids of all ages and abilities to just be kids, be curious, and explore materials and processes that they might not see in other class settings.

Annual Wreath-Making Workshop at Anita
Annual Wreath-Making Workshop at Anita
This was our second annual Art Room fundraiser and wreath-making workshop at Anita! We gathered up evergreen boughs, herbs, flowers, berries, and fruits to be bound into fragrant and decorative wreaths, smudges, or bundles. This is a great way to celebrate the season (holiday traditions or not) by spending quality time with your little ones, enjoying treats and libations, and creating hand-made items that honor the gifts that our gardens and forests provide.

All projects were hands-on fun and designed to let kids be kids, exploring new materials and media to broaden their horizons.
June 27th - 30th 2022
Drawing with Light
Kids made "magic" with photosensitive materials, shined light to find shapes from shadows, and told stories with silhouettes. Sure to spark that sense of wonder in any young STEAM enthusiast, the photographic processes featured in each project involved chemistry, biology, technology, engineering, math, and of course, ART! All projects were hands-on fun, designed to encourage kids of all ages and abilities to just be kids, be curious, and explore.
July 11th - 14th 2022

Saturday Programming at Astoria Library: "Beautiful Oops" Series
Kids of all ages and their parents joined us at Astoria Library every third Saturday to grapple with the process of turning "oops-es" into ART. We spilled, smudged, stained, ripped, punctured, tore, crumpled, and literally destroyed artwork in order to see and create something new from the old. The world is a messy place! Accidents happen and mistakes are a part of being human - and it's very easy to feel frustrated when they occur. The important thing to remember is that we can always choose to use what we have to make something new. What we often find is that mistakes and accidents can lead to some pretty beautiful discoveries!
